Articulated Shanks are a simple and effective way to create longer, more mobile streamers.
The shank is most often connected directly to the hook eye. This allows you to build a larger fly on a single hook while keeping the rear section mobile. The streamer moves more naturally, bends in the water, pulses during pauses and creates a larger profile without adding another hook.
 
This solution works particularly well in:
 
 
 
large pike flies,
 
 
huchen and taimen streamers,
 
 
large saltwater and tropical flies,
 
 
articulated baitfish patterns and Game Changer-style flies.
 
 
Articulated Shanks can also be used as an extension behind the hook, mounted on a loop of heavy monofilament, fluorocarbon or wire. This provides considerable freedom when building tails, additional sections and larger patterns where length, low weight and unrestricted material movement are important.
 
In Game Changer-style patterns, several shanks can be connected in sequence to create a segmented, highly mobile fly.
 
Articulated Shanks are useful wherever greater length and movement are required without unnecessarily increasing the weight of the fly.
